Stronger Economy Leads to Increased, Early Support for Scholarship Fundraiser

May 23, 2013

When Doherty Staffing Solutions of Edina became the lead sponsor of a golf tournament fundraiser for scholarships, they found they were not alone.  Four other local companies—Gould’s Diamonds and Jewelry, Lockton Companies, Ace Solid Waste and Financial One Credit Union—had already stepped forward to offer tournament-level sponsorships for the 22nd annual Anoka-Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus Foundation golf tournament, Tuesday, July 16 at The Refuge Golf Club in Oak Grove.

As companies return to levels of community support seen before the economic downturn began, non-profit organizations are hearing that the businesses never lost the desire to give.

“Growth is needed within the community and schools to help them sustain and thrive,” says Gould’s Marketing Coordinator, Cyrea Lynch.  “We want to give something back.”

And those private contributions are needed. As state funds have been reduced, a greater burden shifted to the students.

“The cost of education has risen dramatically and, as part of our corporate responsibility, we see that providing scholarships will equip students with the additional skills that are going to be required in a more highly competitive world economy,” says tournament sponsor Tim Doherty, Doherty Staffing Solutions.

”While things are better for some, there are still a great number of students struggling to afford higher education following extended unemployment and financial hardship.” Opportunities for support of scholarships at this event range from participating as a golfer to donating a prize to be raffled off to joining the growing list of sponsors. “In these difficult economic times, raising money for scholarship awards becomes even more important,” adds Michael Wall, Tournament Director and Director of Stewardship for the college.

“We hear firsthand how a scholarship award can undeniably make the difference in a student’s ability to continue their education.”

In 2011-2012, the foundation awarded more than 145 scholarships and grants totaling more than $160,000.
