College women’s and men’s basketball teams make history: both teams win regional championships, advance to nationals

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams each won regional championships Sunday, the first time in the college’s history that both teams have won in the same year.

The women’s team defeated Minnesota West Community College by a score of 65-55 during the Region XIIIA tournament. The men’s team defeated Rochester Community and Technical College, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, in overtime by a score of 88-85. Both tournaments were held on Anoka-Ramsey’s Coon Rapids campus.

The women’s team will advance for the fifth consecutive season to the national tournament, making its 14th appearance in the last 21 years. The national championship will be held in Rochester, Minn. March 13-15. The women’s Golden Rams have a 24-3 season record with a 22-game winning streak, and are ranked 3rd in the nation.

The men’s basketball team won the Region XIII championship for the second time in the college’s history, advancing to the national tournament in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. March 13-15. The men’s team has a 23-8 season record and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College competes in the Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conference.
