Kathryn Kysar, a member of the English faculty at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, will kick off a series of appearances celebrating the release of a CD of her poetry at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 28, at 7 p.m.
Kysar received a 2013 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grant to make the CD of her poetry from her book, “Pretend the World,” published in 2011 by Holy Cow! Press.
In the poems, Kysar constructs and reconstructs a world that confronts our false sense of safety and explores the inequities and fissures in women's lives in settings ranging from her Saint Paul kitchen to the historical shores of Lake Superior, from a rock outside of Bagdad to a clothing factory in Guangdong, China.
Recorded at Wild Sound Studio in Minneapolis, the CD features a plethora of readers, including Minnesota Poet Laureate Joyce Sutphen, as well as musicians and singers, such as the well-known soprano Maria Jette and jazz clarinetist Sean Egan. Other readers, singers, and musicians include Stephanie Wilber Ash, Kris Bigalk, April Gibson, David Lawrence Grant, Glen Helgeson, Jim Heynen, Hawona Sullivan Janzen, Anna George Meek, Leslie Adrienne Miller, John Minczeski, Marie Olofsdotter, Susan Power, Sun Yung Shin and Ka Vang.
“I’m so grateful to the people of Minnesota for this opportunity,” Kysar said. “It has been an honor to hear my poems read and sung by such expert artists.”
The CD will be distributed free to libraries around Minnesota with the help of the Metropolitan Library Service Agency and the Minnesota Library Association.
Kysar chairs the Creative Writing subcommittee at Anoka-Ramsey, where she regularly teaches classes on the writing life, creative nonfiction and poetry.
