Words by College Faculty Meet Fiber in Unique Collaboration at Banfill-Locke

August 31, 2009

In a rare meeting of poetry and textile arts, “Contexture,” a collaborative exhibit of poetry by Anoka-Ramsey Community College Humanities Faculty member, Kirsten Dierking and contemporary fiber art by Kimber Olson opens Sept. 4 and will remain on view through Oct. 3 at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts (6666 East River Rd., Fridley).

A special poetry reading by Dierking and reception for both artist and writer is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

The exhibit and the reading are free and open to the public.

“Kimber has created extraordinary pieces in response to a selection of poems I wrote during my residency at Banfill-Locke,” says Dierking. “As the writer-in-residence at Banfill-Locke, I had the opportunity to work with writers of all ages and backgrounds in the community. I was so impressed by their commitment to engage with the arts, both as creators and as audience‑-a concept I promote when I teach.”

As writer- and artist-in-residence at Banfill-Locke for the 2008-2009 year, Dierking and Olson’s 18-month collaboration was primarily funded by a Medtronic Arts Access grant administered through COMPAS of St. Paul.

Gallery Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, contact Banfill-Locke at 763-574-1850.
