College Art Faculty Part of Concordia Exhibit: Crossing Borders/ Photographing Tijuana, Nov. 29 – Dec. 14

November 15, 2012

The recent works of Anoka-Ramsey Community College Art Faculty members, Anthony Marchetti and Laura Migliorino will be included in an exhibition titled, Crossing Borders/Photographing Tijuana, Nov. 29 – Dec. 14 at the Concordia University Art Center (1301 Marshall Ave, St Paul). The works of Alejandro Cartagena and Ingrid Hernandez are also part of the exhibition.

The opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29, 5 to 7 p.m. A panel discussion Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. will include Marchetti, Migliorino as well as Justin Fleming, adjunct professor of Spanish at Concordia University; Holley Wlodarczyk, Suburban Scholar; and William Weber, Director of Sustainable Building Research at the University of Minnesota.

Marchetti was awarded a $10,000 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist initiative grant in 2012 for the project, titled Occidente Nuevo: Recycled Tijuana, which will be part of the Crossing Border exhibition.

Collaborating with Migliorino, Marchetti has been traveling to Tijuana and the surrounding area to photograph the results of the cross-border transmigration of building materials and small suburban homes from San Diego, Calif., while Migliorino has been creating portraits of people living in the structures. Viewed together, the resulting photos create a dialogue and a comprehensive view of the area.

“Although geographically only 20 miles apart, few cities could be further apart economically,” says Marchetti. “San Diego calls itself ‘America’s finest city,’ boasting some of the wealthiest subdivisions in the U.S., while Tijuana is viewed as decadent, transient and very poor.”

This marks Marchetti’s second Arts Board grant. In 2010, he received his first grant for $5,800 to start his Tijuana project. Migliorino also received a 2010 Arts board grant for $8,000.

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
