House of Blue Leaves is set in Sunnyside Queens in 1965. The dark comedy, by John Guare features zookeeper Artie Shaughnessy, who is desperate to escape his lower middle-class life and become a famous songwriter. His crazed wife, Bananas, finds his songs are awful while his mistress, Bunny Flingus encourages his lofty ambitions. When the Pope visits New York City, Artie thinks it’s time for his life to get blessed as well. But before he can reach out to his old school buddy, a famous film director in Los Angeles, for a job writing music for the movies, Artie's son goes AWOL from the army and hatches a plot to blow up the Pope at Yankee Stadium. When the bomb explodes prematurely, chaos reigns in a mix of laughter, drama and social commentary.
