College Offers Unique Opportunity to Study in Costa Rica in Spring 2014

September 12, 2013

Want to visit the home of 5% of the world’s biodiversity in spring 2015?

Through a unique collaboration of 14 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) to provide a global educational experience (EGL), Anoka-Ramsey Community College students have an opportunity to visit Costa Rica for an eight-week program in spring 2014 (Jan. 26 through March 23, 2014).

While studying Spanish, students also chose to take two additional courses in environment science, sociology and writing taught in English at the Instituto de Cultura y Lengua de Costaricense (ICLC) in Alajuela. In their free time students can explore the incredibly diverse terrain, biota, and weather in the area where North and South America as well as the Caribbean and the Pacific come together

“I am excited to teach environmental science in a country which has 12 ecological zones and 25% of its land protected,” said Anoka-Ramsey Biology instructor Joan McKearnan. “What better opportunity to learn Spanish than to be immersed in the Costa Rican culture. Further, I am sure there will be much inspiration for creative writers and students studying sociology.”

During their study in Costa Rica, students will also have the opportunity to experience the history and culture in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley) where, in 1856, the battle of the Hacienda Santa Rosa was proved to be a pivotal event in Costa Rica’s struggle for independence from Spain.

For many Americans, Costa Rica is a vacation destination as a leader in adventure and eco-tourism, but it is also a preferred destination for health and well-being, educational, and youth tourism. Residents of Costa Rica work diligently to protect their unique landscape and their efforts are reflected in the preservation of the natural heritage that has made Costa Rica an internationally famous green destination.

Applications for this study abroad in spring semester 2014 are due by Nov. 1, 2013.
