College Welcomes Visiting Chinese Faculty

September 12, 2013

Anoka-Ramsey Community College students have the unique opportunity to learn the Chinese language and culture from Donghua Zhu, an exchange faculty member from the college’s sister school, Zhaoqing University in Zhaoqing, China. Donghua will teach Chinese language and culture at the college throughout the 2013-2014 academic year.

Donghua, who holds a master's degree in English Language and Literature, was chosen among several of her colleagues to teach in the U.S. At Zhaoqing University she has taught English and linguistics for the past 13 years. She is married and has a 10-year-old daughter. She left her family in China for the opportunity to participate in the exchange program.

Since arriving in the U.S. in late-August, Donghua has attended the Minnesota State Fair and visited Duluth, MN, and has been pleased to discover that her colleagues at the college are warm-hearted, helpful and enjoy music and art as much as she does. She is hoping to travel more extensively during academic breaks to learn more about American culture and to share information about her own culture including her home county.

“Zhaoqing has beautiful scenery and is visited by many tourists,” said Donghua. “It is located in the west of Guangdong City, and it is surrounded by the Seven Crags Lake, Xijiang River and hills. You can find the delicious local food, places for shopping, and traditional customs and historic sites in Song Dynasty.”

Donghua is the 14th faculty member from Zhaoqing University to come to Anoka-Ramsey in an effort to promote intercultural understanding. Since the establishment of this exchange relationship in 1994, the college has sent five of its faculty to teach and approximately 40 students to study at the Chinese University. In addition, a group from the City of Coon Rapids and college staff traveled to Zhaoqing, China in 2001, and developed a sister relationship between the two cities.

"Donghua will guest lecturer in many of college classrooms during her stay, and she is also excited about the prospect of speaking at off-campus as well at schools, businesses and churches," said Luanne Kane Hogan, Dean of Educational Services.
