Two New Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) Grants

The Continuing Education and Customized Training division was recently awarded two Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) grants to develop business solutions for two Minnesota manufacturers.  Dr. Steven Jones received a grant for $150,000 to partner with Minco Products, located in Fridley, Minn.  Key goals of the grant are to strengthen the businesses' operational and leadership structure through new programs in quality, operations management and technical training.  Drawing upon the college's Center for Lean and newly developed programs in process improvement, a training model will be designed for Minco to create greater cooperation and leadership across company divisions.  Silo operations and communication barriers will be replaced with higher functioning departments that provide quicker response time, greater customer satisfaction and a more efficient business model.

The second MJSP grant was awarded in the amount of $300,000 and is a collaboration with North Hennepin Community College to partner with Accellent, Inc., a manufacturer of precision parts and assemblies for the medical device industry.  Working together, North Hennepin Community College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College will provide comprehensive advanced training to all Accellent employees in the state of Minnesota that will create a platform for growth the company needs to compete in the changing world of the medical device and health industries.  Training goals include a leadership transformation in the Accellent workplace that incorporates Training Within Industry (TWI), a dynamic program using a learn-by-doing approach for teaching essential skills to supervisors and team leaders.  Accellent will also undergo a truly integrated lean operation using process improvement methodologies and the practices of Six Sigma.  Allan Callander, Director of Continuing Education and Customized Training, will manage the grant and add his medical device experience in the technical areas of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM).

 

Wellness Works Program Offers FREE Chair Massages

Massage provides relief to people of all ages - from infants to seniors - and from all walks of life - the weekend or competetive athlete to the home gardener or overstressed, overworked executive.

Massage therapy addresses a variety of health conditions, the most prevalent being stress-related tension, which, experts believe, accounts for 80 percent to 90 percent of disease.  Massage has been proven beneficial in treating cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, low back pain, immunity suppression, spinal cord injury, autism, post-operative surgery, age-related disorders, infertility, eating disorders, smoking cession and depression, to name just a few.

  • Chair massages are FREE to Anoka-Ramsey Community College employees
  • Massages are 10 minutes in length
  • Sign up at the Information Desk at the Cambridge Campus or the Wellness Works bulletin board at the Coon Rapids Campus (located by Central Services)

Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Alexander Payne

Dr. Dawn Alexander Payne was recently invited to present a paper at the spring 2010 Oxford Round Table focusing on God, Politics, Foreign Policy: The Invisible Hand.  Participation is limited to 35 scholars.  Due to the cost, Dawn will not be able to accept the invitation this year, but she is hoping to be invited again in the future.

Dear Pat [Johns],

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Office of the Chancellor, congratulations on your recent receipt of a Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant, and on your partnership in a grant with North Hennepin Community College and Robbinsdale and Osseo Adult Basic Education.  Your institution is one of the 11 in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system to receive grants.  You will be pleased to learn that funds awarded to the system in this grant round amounted to $2,582,569, or 92.7 percent of the total awarded.

As you know, the system's ability to leverage assets in search of external funding sources remains a critical component in our planning and vision for the future.  Your diligence in pursuing these grants reflects a commitment to this direction.

It is important to share with you how much the contribution of your precision electro-mechanical device manufacturing business partners is appreciated.  The business community's dedication to the proposed project, both in creativity and expertise and in financial commitment, is invaluable.  Please convey my congratulations to all who were a part of this success.

College President Pat Johns hosted breakfast for community leaders in Cambridge, Oct. 28 and Coon Rapids, Dec. 3 with the intent of strengthening relationships and partnerships.  The attendees shared comments about the college and offered advice for Dr. Johns to consider in the future.

College Announces Five New Degree Programs for Spring Semester 2010

To meet the needs of students and the current employment market, Anoka-Ramsey recently announced five new degree programs.

  • Associate in Arts with Arts Emphasis
  • Associate in Arts with Psychology Emphasis
  • Associate in Science in Business Industry and Technology
  • Associate in Science in Human Resources
  • Associate in Science in Sales Management

Ideas for new academic programs emerge from faculty, administration, advisory committees and as a result of strategic or academic planning.

Before new programs are developed, the college rigorously researches the demand for graduates and student interest.  Metro Alliance, non-Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, private and for-profit college programs are also reviewed for evidence of program duplication.

Degrees from Anoka-Ramsey are designed to translate into immediate employment or to transfer to a four-year institution.

Currently Anoka-Ramsey offers more than 90 degree, certificate and non-credit career enhanced programs to serve the Twin Cities' metropolitan area and East Central Minnesota.

Access and Opportunity Recruitment Day - 150 High School Students on Campus

Access and Opportunity Recruitment day, Dec. 16, is designed to provide access to Anoka-Ramsey Community College campuses for underrepresented high school students from the neighboring Twin City school districts.  One hundred, fifty students from Coon Rapids High School, Fridley High School and Patrick Henry High School will be on campus in Coon Rapids to attend the event that is geared toward learning about how to survive and be successful in college.  Workshops will focus on college students, their support systems and college life.  Special thanks to event organizers and presenters Dave Alto, Ann Anderson, Genna Anderson, Robert Cancino, Marcellus Davis, Thom Nordin, Melissa Schultz, Ryan Olson, Jan Pomeroy, Wanda Purdie, Karla Seymour, Shannon Watson, Ashley Weatherspoon and Mai Choua Yang.

 

"Crossings" Magazine in Mailboxes

The fall 2009 issue of the college magazine, "Crossings," begins arriving in mailboxes today.

This publication is mailed to nearly 32,000 alumni, donors, legislators and other college supporters to highlight a sampling of the great works happening at Anoka-Ramsey Community College and to encourage their continued support of the college and our students. This issue also contains the 2008-09 annual report, click HERE to view the Web version of the publication.

After you've had a chance to read the publication, feel free to forward your comments and suggestions for future publications.

Check Out Women's Basketball Team, Ranked #3

The Golden Rams Women's Basketball Team is currently ranked #3 in the most recent NJCAA Division III National Poll. Their record is currently 8-2 on the season, with the only two losses coming to two NJCAA Division I schools.

With all of the team's early success, the awards are already coming in. For the first time, the Women's Basketball team has earned an MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week for three consecutive weeks.  Also, this past week, Alex Moore won National Player of the Week Honors.

"It brings good recognition to our program and highlights the quality of players we get here at Anoka-Ramsey," says Head Women's Basketball Coach, Dave DeWitt.

Overall, the team features a well-balanced attack with constant pressure applied for 40 minutes. The women play at an exciting pace which is fun for everyone to watch.

Don't miss out on the action. Check out the team in the Anoka-Ramsey Holiday Classic.  Friday, Dec. 18, the women play Vermillion at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 19, they play Bismarck State at 2 p.m..  Both games are at the Coon Rapids Campus gymnasium and are FREE to all staff and students.

Students Receive High Tech Scholarships

Current Anoka-Ramsey Community College student Loan (Mei) Luu and an Anoka-Ramsey alumna, Tanya Prader, recently received a 2009 Minnesota High Tech Foundation Scholarship.

Despite living in the U.S. for only three years, Luu has been on the Anoka-Ramsey Dean's list for four semesters.

"I have had the opportunity to work closely with Loan (Mei) Luu as both a student and a tutor, and she has impressed me in both capacities," says college Faculty member, Megan Breit-Goodwin.

Luu aspires to earn her bachelor's degree in Mathematics and to teach math in a two-year college.

Prader, currently a junior in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, was also a 2009 High Tech Scholarship recipient. Prader, the mother of two children, maintained a 3.88 GPA while at Anoka-Ramsey.

"Tanya is one of the highest achieving students I have ever taught," says Anoka-Ramsey Faculty member, Nina Bohrod.

Luu and Prader were among only six students state-wide to receive the Minnesota High Tech Foundation scholarships.

Students, staff and faculty attended Dr. Whitney Harris' lecture titled "Why Diversity Matters," held on both campuses, Dec. 3.  Harris is the Executive Director for the Office of Diversity and Multiculturalism for the Office of the Chancellor.  This event was organized by Marcellus Davis, Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

      •  Academic Program Improvement - Academic Policy ES-03-FY09 The current language in the program review policy is moved to a new procedure and is placed with a more general statement about the purpose of program review.  The link to MnSCU policy is updated to reflect changes in MnSCU policy.  Rationale: The current policy statement is mostly procedural in nature.  This language is moved to a newly created procedure on program review.
      • Art 2241: Painting - Change a course A-02-FY10 Update Learner Outcomes and other course-related items.  Rationale: Needed updating to be current.
      • Associate in Arts degree - Change a program ES-05-FY10 Reduce total number of credits needed for the AA degree to 60.  Rationale: MnSCU mandate

      • Nursing Program - Change a program N-02-FY10 1. Change of Policy 3E.1 Adm and Procedure 3E.1/11 Adm. Change in the application information and process for the nursing program.  Removal of nursing information sessions: 2. Eliminate any reference on the application process to science courses CHEM 1020 and BIOL 1106.  3. Change the cumulative GPA to the last GPA in the last 10 years.  4. Change to one admission allowed into the nursing program.  Rationale: 1. The information sessions were created to reduce the number of questions asked about the admission process in general.  Since the implementation of these sessions there has been no change in the amount of questions from potential students.  There is currently not enough staff to cover both incoming student questions and nursing information sessions.  2. As MnSCU moves forward with the 60/120 credit limitation, the removal of these courses as required for application process will allow the nursing division increased flexibility.  Chemistry 1020 and Biology 1106 would put the nursing program at 72 credits.  These courses will not be required as part of the application or the application process.  Biology 2113 & 2114 will not change.  3. GPA change will allow for older courses not to impede students from meeting entrance requirements for the nursing program.  4. Change to one admission allowed into the nursing program with no re-admissions.  If there are exceptional student circumstances the college exception to policy would address this need.  Currently students who fail academically are allowed to re-enter the program on a space available basis.  This causes difficulties in clinical placement and in the number of total students in the program sequence.  The nursing program is accountable to the accreditation organization (NLNAC) for student completion/retention of 150% of program total completion time.  The re-admitted students 35% academically fail a second time, and 50% fail the NCLEX the first time.  This reduces the number of students that can be admitted to the program.  If there was an exception the college exception to policy could address this on an as needed basis.
      • Physical Therapist Assistant Program - Change a program N-01-FY10 Policy 3E.1 Adm and Procedure 3E.1/11 Adm. Change in the application information and process for the PTA program.  Admission requirement will be amended to include options to the clinical site visit.  Rationale: This change is required by MnSCU Office of Civil Rights audit findings Feb. 6, 2008.
      • IHH-12-FY10 Holistic Hospice and Palliative Care - Add a program IHH-12-FY10 New certificate added into the Integrative Health and Healing Dept. Rationale: Developed in response to a need expressed by Fairview RedWing Health Services and in conjunction w/SE Tech Coll. An MJSP grant was rec'd for implementation of this certificate.

      III.   New Proposals:

      • Antrhopology 2201: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology - Change a course SS-01-FY10 Addition of one required competency.  Revision of learner outcomes and course content to better represent currrent best practices.  Rationale: MnSCU requirements for number of competencies.  Improvement of language for outcomes and content lists.

      Mass Mailer Drives Web Hits

      The college mass mailer (formerly the "Achiever") was sent to nearly 300,000 residents in the Anoka-Ramsey Community College service area in mid-November to re-enforcee the college's presence in the community and encourage registration for the spring semester.

      To unscientifically estimate the impact of the mailer, a dedicated Web page was established. The Success page includes both a PDF version of the publication and a list of links to videos of the students profiled in the publication.

      As of Dec. 14, 704 unique visitors* had visited the Success page, and the video profiles had received 201 viewings.

      Overall, Web traffic in November included 50,405 unique visitors, who made 245,801 visits to the college Web site to view 2,759,281 pages.

      *Unique visitors are counted only once no matter how many times they visit the site.
       

      Semester Break Open Weight Room Hours

      During the semester break until Jan. 7, the Coon Rapids Campus Weight Room will be open: Monday-Thursday, noon to 3 p.m.

      Photo ID Cards

      Photo ID Cards is required for all employees and students.

      The Marketing Department would like to give a shout out to Todd Ames in Technology.  Todd continues to come through as we figure out the capabilities of the new Web software, and he comes through quickly, helping us make things work, and work well.  He is knowledgeable, friendly and efficient, and we appreciate how much easier, and more fun, he makes all things Web. 

      You're one great computer geek, Todd.  The college is lucky to have you!
