Department Description
The English Department teaches every student in the college critical thinking, academic writing, and analytical reading skills in freshman composition. We also offer historical and genre-based literature classes and a variety of exploratory creative writing classes. The department has three degrees: an Associate of Arts in English with an emphasis in Literature, an Associate of Arts in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, and an Associate of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree.

Reading Series and Clubs

The English Department presents students with a variety of engaging literary opportunities. On the Coon Rapids campus, the Two Rivers Reading Series allows students to study a book then interact with the published author. On our Cambridge campus, students can hear meet well-known writers through the citywide Minnesota Authors Reading Series. Both campuses host student and faculty readings and have active creative writing clubs that publish the student literary magazines.

Academic Options

There are three degree options that students can pursue through the English Department. The Associate of Arts in English with an emphasis in Literature degree includes historical American and British Literature survey classes as well as genre courses. The Associate of Arts with an emphasis in Creative Writing degree offers students courses in American and British literature and creative writing. Both AA degrees articulate to Moorhead State and Hamline University. Our Associate of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree gives students a variety of choices in literature and creative writing courses, a practicum in publishing, and a capstone manuscript independent study. The AFA in Creative Writing articulates to Metropolitan State University, Hamline University, and Augsburg College.
