Anoka-Ramsey Women's Basketball team brings home the MCCC State Tournament runner-up trophy.

Ice-cold shooting did in the Anoka-Ramsey Golden Rams as they fell to Rochester in the Championship game of the 2008 MCCC State Tournament. Anoka-Ramsey shot 26% from the floor for the game. In spite of the awful shooting display, the Rams did manage a furious comeback with just under 7 minutes left in the game. Down by 18, they pulled to within 7, at 53-46, and had a couple of chances to get it even closer, but just could not get the lid off the basket. Fouling at the end made the final score 63-49. Sonja Ellingson scored 14 points followed by 12 from Amanda Reh. Love Washington added another 11 points. Ellingson pulled in 10 rebounds as well.

The opening game of the tournament pitted Anoka-Ramsey against Itasca, the Northern Division Champion. Itasca had a 12-0 Division record and was ranked #4 in the country. As cold as Anoka-Ramsey was in the Rochester game, they were quite warm against Itasca. Shooting 55% for the game overall and making 12 threes was more than Itasca could handle. The final score was 81-47. Once again, Anoka-Ramsey was paced by Sonja Ellingson with 28 points and 6 rebounds. Amanda Reh added 16 points and Jessica Cichy contributed 11.

In the semi-final game, Anoka-Ramsey took on Central Lakes who upset #8 ranked Riverland in the opening round. Again, the Rams could not find the basket as they shot 22% for the game but did manage to score 65 points as they shot 28 for 33 from the free-throw line. The final score was 65-42. Sonja Ellingson led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Amanda Reh contributed 16 points to the cause.

Both Ellingson and Reh were named to the All Tournament Team, 1st Team Southern Division and 1st Team All State. They were both named to the All Region 13 Team as well. Jessica Cichy received Southern Division Honorable Mention recognition.

The Golden Rams finish their season with a 22-7 record. While we all wish we could have continued, it was a very good year, one in which this team overcame some adversity in the form of injuries just to make the tournament.

Anoka-Ramsey will lose Sonja Ellingson, Amanda Reh, Love Washington-all part of last year’s National Championship Team-and Kelley Olson as well. These big loses for the team need to be filled! We set our sights on next year and look forward to seeing what the 2008-2009 season holds for us.

Thanks for your support throughout the year. If you know of players out there, please let us know. You are the best recruiters we have!
