Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
All students need to maintain the following minimum cumulative standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) beginning with the 6th attempted credit:
Grade Point Average (GPA):
Students are expected to meet or exceed a cumulative earned GPA of 2.00 (a C average).
Students are expected to meet or exceed a cumulative earned percentage of 67%.
Calculating Completion Rate
Maximum Time Frame (for financial aid recipients):
Students may continue to receive financial aid through 150% of the published credit length of the declared program (example: 150% of a 60 credit AA degree equals 90 credits).
A student’s academic progress will be evaluated before the 10th day of the following academic term.
A student failing to meet the minimum cumulative GPA and/or completion rate is immediately placed on warning. A student on warning remains eligible to enroll and receive financial aid. No appeal is necessary for this status. If at the end of the semester the student has met both the GPA and completion rate, the warning status will end.
A student on warning status failing to meet the cumulative GPA and/or completion rate during his/her next term of enrollment is immediately placed on suspension. A student on suspension is not eligible to register for courses or receive financial aid. In order to be able to eligible to register and receive financial aid the student must have an extenuating circumstance and successfully appeal the suspension through submitting a Suspension Appeal. Neither paying for his or her own classes, nor sitting out a period of time is sufficient to reestablish eligibility for a student.
A student who has successfully appealed a suspension will be placed on probation for one semester. If at the end of the semester the student has met both the cumulative GPA and completion rate, the probation status will end. If the student has not met the cumulative GPA and/or completion rate but has a 2.5 semester GPA and 100% semester completion rate, the student will be under a probationary status for another semester. If the student has not met the cumulative GPA and/or completion rate and has also not met a 2.5 semester GPA and 100% semester completion rate, the student will be re-suspended.
A student reaching 150% of the published credit length of the program is immediately suspended from financial aid eligibility. A Maximum Time Frame Appeal must be filled out and submitted to the Financial Aid Office if the student wants to continue receiving financial aid (for courses in a declared major or prerequisite courses only).
Students failing to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards will be notified in writing. Notification will include conditions of warning, suspension, or probation and the process to appeal suspension status.
Notification of approved appeals will be emailed to the student’s Anoka-Ramsey email account and include the standards that the student is expected to meet and the academic plan that the student is expected to complete in order to retain financial aid eligibility at the end of the next semester.
Notification of denied appeals will be emailed to the student’s Anoka-Ramsey email account and describe the reason(s) for the denial and the process for appealing that denial.
GPA is determined by dividing the total number grade points earned by the total of number of credit hours attempted. Anoka-Ramsey Community College is on a 4 point system:
A = 4 grade points
B = 3 grade points
C = 2 grade points
D = 1 grade point
F = 0 grade points
B in a 4 credit course
C in a 3 credit course
3 grade points (for the B) x 4 credits = 12 grade points
2 grade points (for the C) x 3 credits = 6 grade points
12 grade points + 6 grade points = 18 grade points
18 grade points / 7 credits (total number of credits taken) = 2.57 GPA

Calculating Completion Rate:
To calculate completion rate, divide the credits earned by credits attempted and multiply by 100. These numbers are indicated at the end of a student’s transcript.
