Alternative Credit Options

Anoka-Ramsey Community College students have several alternative options for earning credits to be applied to a degree or certificate. Unless otherwise indicated, such credit is noted on the student's transcript with the letter grade of Pass/Fail or Pass/No Credit.

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

The Advanced Placement (AP) program for high school students provides an opportunity to participate in classes that are more rigorous and more in-depth than traditional high school classes. The College Board evaluates and recommends credit for each score of three or more on the five-point Advanced Placement exams.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States. The American Council on Education (ACE) evaluates and recommends credit for successful examinations in 33 college-level introductory subjects. www.collegeboard.com

Career Internships Field Experience Program

The Career Internship Field Experience Program extends the classroom into an on-the-job location designed to provide students with a realistic introduction to potential careers. Internships earn two, four, or six credits. Each two-credit experience requires 45 hours on the job and attendance at a weekly seminar.

Students who have earned at least 20 college credits and who have at least a 2.0 GPA may enroll for the Cooperative Education Program.

Course Specific Examinations

Anoka-Ramsey's Credit by Examination program provides students, who demonstrate achievement in the content of a college-level course, the opportunity to be granted a maximum of 10 college credits.

Students choose a letter grade or the Pass/Fail option. There is no retest in the event of an unsuccessful examination.

The Course Specific Examinations is an exam specific to Anoka-Ramsey. Credits granted may or may not be accepted for transfer.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a nontraditional, individualized program designed to meet the educational needs of adults by allowing the student's experiential learning to be assessed for college credit and applied toward an associate degree. This flexible program utilizes community resources, individualized choice of study, on-the-job training, in-service workshops, classroom instruction and internships.

Students interested in the CPL program need to meet with the program coordinator and complete the 1-credit Individualized Educational Planning Course, ICBE 1101.

DSST previously called Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (Dantes)

All students may have the opportunity to earn credits by taking a DSST/Dantes exam. Those who have served in the military are recommended to participate in this option to earn college credits. If you have served in the military, more information is available within the Department of Defense. For more information on the test visit www.getcollegecredit.com.

Independent Study

Independent Study offers an in-depth study in one area and the opportunity for extensive reading and research on a specific topic not offered as a regular course. Independent Study requires prior approval from the appropriate dean and the appropriate instructor.

Learning Communities

A Learning Community is a grouping of two or three individual courses, organized around a common theme, and taught seamlessly together as if they were one course. Students are able to learn multiple subjects with the same group of students and teachers.

Off-Campus Locations

Anoka-Ramsey's program to bring courses and programs into the community provides students with the opportunity to enjoy learning, expand skills, start degrees, or complete prerequisites and general education classes at convenient off-campus locations.

Articulated Credit Program

Successful completion of designated courses through the Oak Land Artciulated Credit Progra Consortium program may substitute for specific college courses or as elective credits in some programs at Anoka-Ramsey. Students admitted and registered at Anoka-Ramsey must present the original Tech Prep College Credit Certificate to the Records Office within the time limit specified on the certificate to be granted course credit.
