Secretary of State Encourages Students, Community to Vote Nov. 3

One week before Minnesota's Nov. 3 midterm election, Secretary of State Steve Simon encouraged students and community members to learn about the issues and candidates on their ballots and participate in the electoral process.
Speaking at Anoka-Ramsey's Cambridge and Coon Rapids campuses, Simon highlighted Minnesota's long-standing record of voter participation.
"Minnesota is perennially a voting champion," he said. "Two years ago, in 2024, Minnesota was No. 1 in the country in youth voter turnout."
Simon attributed the state's strong voter participation to election laws that balance access and security, as well as a culture that values civic engagement. He also encouraged voters, particularly first-time voters, not to feel overwhelmed by lengthy ballots.
"Vote for what you know, and leave the rest blank," Simon said. "Don't beat yourself up about not having an opinion on everything."
Simon said voting is often framed as a civic responsibility, but he encouraged students to view it as a matter of personal interest as well.
"It's in your personal self-interest to vote," he said. "People and communities that vote tend to get attention. And when you get attention, you're more likely than otherwise to get some of the stuff that you want."
